Getting Pier Spacing Right

Exterior Pier Spacing

Corey Explains How Proper Layout Ensures Lasting Stability

At Grip-Tite Manufacturing, precision is key to every successful foundation repair project — and that starts with accurate pier spacing. Knowing how to adjust spacing based on a structure’s load ensures the repair supports the home safely and effectively.

“Piers are spaced typically two feet off the corners and then not to exceed a six-foot spacing,” Corey explained. “It’s important that you pay attention to what you’re carrying for load — what the load of the house is.”

For heavier or multi-story structures, piers should be positioned closer together to handle increased weight.

“The heavier the structure, the closer I recommend placing your piers,” Corey said. “For a standard single-story home, spacing around five-and-a-half feet typically works well.”

Beyond the layout itself, Corey stresses the value of using clean, professional marking methods during preparation.

“I recommend using painter’s tape for your marking,” he noted. “We used to use lumber crayons, but if you move the piers, the marks are there forever — and nobody wants crayon marks left on their house.”

This simple practice keeps the job site clean and the customer satisfied.

“Tape comes off easily, but remember when you’re done, pull your tape off and give that customer what they’re looking for,” Corey added.

With careful spacing and attention to detail, Grip-Tite installers can ensure each pier installation is both structurally sound and professionally finished.
